Partial Estate of Joseph Joachim

Cataloguing and Digital Presentation of the Partial Estate of Joseph Joachim

One of the greatest treasures of Brahms-Institut at Musikhochschule Lübeck is the partial estate of the renowned violinist and Brahms friend Joseph Joachim (1831–1907). The estate includes music manuscripts and copies, as well as numerous letters and photographs, concert programs and newspaper clippings. The most extensive file comprises around 900 letters to his brother Heinrich (ca. 1825–1897) and his wife Ellen Margarete Joachim, née Smart (ca. 1844–1924).

In a two-year project, the estate was catalogued and digitized. This was made possible by the HERMANN REEMTSMA STIFTUNG, which financed the project in the context of the funding program Kunst auf Lager (Art in Storage). Under the project management of Wolfgang Sandberger, Fabian Bergener catalogued the costly materials and trascribed the 900 letters of Joachim to his brother. He was supported in his efforts by volunteer Volker Schmitz. Since March 2018, the letter transcriptions and digitized material have been available to the public and are freely accessible via the website of the Brahms-Insitut.
