Brahms-Institut an der Musikhochschule Lübeck

Collecting – Research – Public Outreach

The Brahms-Institut an der Musikhochschule Lübeck (Brahms-Institut at Musikhochschule Lübeck) is an international center of expertise and documentation. Founded in 1991 with the acquisition of the largest private Brahms collection in the world (Sammlung Hofmann), the Brahms-Institut is an independent institution located at Musikhochschule Lübeck.

In the summer of 2002, the Brahms-Institut moved to its new, representative home at Villa Brahms on Lübeck’s Jerusalemberg. The neo-classicist country estate offers an ideal venue for concerts, conferences, special thematic evenings, and the exhibitions directed at an interested audience.

Collecting entails responsibility: true to this motto, the institute has a variety of tasks. The holdings are expanded by engaging in targeted collecting, while also being preserved, catalogued, and researched. Thanks to the generous support of numerous foundations, the collection has been expanded in recent years with high quality source material. Making the collection open to the public also includes the preparation of sources in a digital form (»Digital Brahms«). In addition, several research projects and dissertation projects are also located at the institute. The Brahms-Institut maintains a network that connects with institutions across Germany and around the world in various ways.

Thanks to their close connection, the Brahms-Institute and the Musikhochschule have brought to pass a fruitful exchange of musical research and and artistic practice. The Brahms-Festival of Musikhochschule Lübeck is one of many examples of this exchange and enjoys great popularity even beyond the region of Lübeck.

Wolfgang Sandberger has been director since 1999.
